As one of the underprivileged empowerment through upskilling programmes, Persatuan Seni Jahitan Kreatif Malaysia (PSJKM) has been involved in empowering indigenous communities at Sg. Siput, Perak, through a comprehensive skills training program, bridging the gap between traditional skills and market demands. This initiative, rooted in community development and sustainability, has not only enhanced the livelihoods of indigenous villagers but has also paved the way for a harmonious blend of heritage and modern market needs.

For over a decade, PSJKM has been deeply committed to uplifting Malaysia’s indigenous communities, known as the “Orang Asli.” Recognising the need for sustainable solutions beyond conventional forms of support, the organisation embarked on an empowerment program focused on equipping indigenous villagers with skills that align with market demands.

The heart of this initiative lies in providing training to indigenous villagers, recognising and harnessing their existing skills while introducing them to market-relevant techniques. Classes in eco-printing, creative sewing, and other practical skills have been incorporated to ensure that villagers not only preserve their cultural heritage but also meet contemporary market requirements.

Indigenous communities often possess unique skills rooted in their rich cultural heritage. However, to thrive in today’s market, additional training is essential. PSJKM believes that empowering indigenous individuals with practical skills not only enhances their economic prospects but also allows them to contribute meaningfully to the broader community.

One of the main focuses of the program is to make the skills acquired by the indigenous villagers commercially viable. Eco-printing, a textile technique utilising locally sourced plants, not only showcases the community’s connection to the environment but also meets the growing demand for sustainable products. Creative sewing and other skills further enhance their marketability, ensuring a sustainable source of income.

Through the program, numerous indigenous individuals have transformed their lives. Villagers who once faced challenges in securing employment outside their communities are now thriving entrepreneurs. One notable success story is emerging from Kampung Beswok, which has been under the care of PSJKM since the early part of the year.

Since the initiation of the program, Kampung Beswok has not only embraced the skills taught but has also become a hub of cultural experiences for tourists. The villagers have proactively conducted workshops for tourists visiting their village, showcasing their newly acquired skills. The introduction of services such as jungle bathing, eco-printing workshops, and others has significantly contributed to the rise in the number of tourists, fostering economic growth within the community. These success stories exemplify the tangible impact of skills training, not just in individual lives but in transforming entire communities into vibrant, self-sustaining entities.

As PSJKM reflects on the success of this empowerment program, the organisation remains committed to its mission of fostering sustainable development and preserving cultural heritage. The collaboration with indigenous communities is an ongoing journey, and PSJKM envisions expanding the program to reach more individuals and create a ripple effect of positive change.

The indigenous empowerment program led by PSJKM stands as a testament to the transformative power of skills training. By blending traditional knowledge with market-driven skills, the program not only enriches the lives of indigenous communities but also creates a model for sustainable development that respects cultural identity.

Aligned with our commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment, we welcome individuals, organisations, and potential collaborators to join hands with us on this meaningful journey.
