PSJKM’s Expertise in Indigenous Community (Orang Asli) Empowerment
On 16th October 2024, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) invited Persatuan Seni Jahitan Kreatif Malaysia (PSJKM) to a virtual conference on Malaysia’s Indigenous Community (Orang Asli) Empowerment. UKM recognized PSJKM’s successful Indigenous Community Empowerment Program, which operates in Perak (Kg. Beswok), Pahang (Kg. Gumum), and Selangor (Serendah & Bukit Lagong).
PSJKM has empowered the Orang Asli by equipping them with valuable skills that generate sustainable income. In Kg. Beswok and Kg. Gumum, Indigenous communities have benefited from tailored training programs, leading to financial independence. Inspired by these achievements, UKM invited PSJKM to discuss how students can gain insights from these real-world initiatives for their latest empowerment project.
Engaging Discussion on Orang Asli Empowerment
The one-hour conference provided an insightful exchange of knowledge between PSJKM and UKM students. Participants learned about the challenges and opportunities in working with the Orang Asli. The discussion focused on effective strategies to introduce practical skills that Indigenous communities are willing to adopt.
PSJKM representatives, Ms. Careen Yen and Mr. JY Chua, shared their field experiences, emphasizing the importance of culturally sensitive approaches. They highlighted how empowerment efforts should align with Indigenous values and traditions to achieve meaningful impact.
Mutual Learning and Collaboration
Beyond sharing knowledge, the conference fostered creative idea exchanges. UKM students contributed fresh perspectives, inspiring PSJKM to explore new strategies for future projects. This collaboration demonstrated how academia and community-driven initiatives can work together to support Indigenous empowerment.
PSJKM appreciates UKM’s initiative in organizing this conference. The engagement strengthened the organization’s commitment to assisting more Indigenous communities. By sharing expertise, PSJKM hopes to enhance students’ understanding and encourage them to take part in future empowerment programs.
